About

Built from experience and expertise

Marker is a team of world-class clinicians, psychometricians, engineers, and data scientists, plus the people who train examiners, recruit families, run the study in the field, and do everything else building assessments takes. All of them shaped the test itself, not just their own piece.

Our authors

We built the battery across three disciplines.

Clinical expertise to understand how individuals should be assessed, psychometric rigor to ensure scores are valid and meaningful, and data science to make testing adaptive and efficient. We’ve assembled a team with expertise across all three.

“Innovation in testing has lagged far behind advancements in other fields but not anymore. Purpose-built technology allows for creation of tests with exceptional fairness and superior measurement for everyone. The future of testing is here.”

A pioneer and leader in nondiscriminatory assessment and author of the Ortiz PVAT, co-author of Cross-Battery Assessment (XBA), X-BASS, and dozens of scholarly books and other publications across 30+ years in the field.

“Fifty years ago, advances in psychometrics changed what clinicians could learn from the way a student performed on test items. Now, technology and data science are giving our field the tools to go so much further. Instead of being limited to the traditional scores we get from tests, we are able to capture what’s happening throughout the assessment and we can use that data to understand a student’s learning in much greater depth. I was drawn to Marker by the opportunity to be part of a team that is building what I believe could be the next generation of assessment.”

“I got support for my dyslexia early. Most kids don’t. The wait runs for years, the cost puts it out of reach, and plenty of families never get there at all. Behind every missed diagnosis is a kid who was told they were lazy, when no one ever gave them the right test. I came to Marker to build that test. Data science and AI are how we get there: the most advanced digital assessment ever built.”

Leads product development and research at Marker. Spent her career building data products that turn deep data into something people enjoy using.

Our story

Why Marker exists.

“I struggled in school, and as a student in special ed in the third grade, I couldn’t read. Teachers told my mother I’d be lucky to graduate high school. My mother, Jayne Bauer, refused to accept that, and she fought until I got the learning disability testing and the support that came with it. What she understood, long before anyone measured it, was that I could learn.

She passed away before I graduated from Yale. She wasn’t in the audience that day, but she was the reason I walked across that stage. So was every school psychologist, specialist, and special education team member who looked at me as a student worth the effort.

There are millions of kids waiting for someone to see them clearly. Marker exists to build assessments and technology worthy of the people who do.”
